Been kind of busy so haven't been on here much in the last week or two. Got an email the other day from Mr X and then earlier today the rest of the trade showed up. The pull on everything came out pretty decent. Went ahead and emailed Infrno to let him know we've reached closure on the trade as well. Just glad to be done with the trade. Now just have to get some time to get everything mounted and cleaned up. I'll do a separate post for the mounting when I get a chance. So You take the order and you let them pay you in full, but where you failed is not leaving the money in an escrow account until the product is ready to ship. I'm admittedly hooooooooorible with timelines, and is why I stopped selling. I've got enough commissions going to last me the rest of this year and last year I tried to add in a few things but I kept falling behind. Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut I don't take a penny for payment until I'm done. Been very very few excepts that I have ever broken that rule. That's no excuse but it has helped keep my commissioners happier because I'm not holding their project and their money. And if they ever said they want their stuff back its as easy as a box and postal visit. In the end I will always always come thru and your project never leaves my studio till I'm satisfied with it and that means you'll be satisfied with it. I'm not making my living off my studio, not really interested in taking commissions because we are busy remastering the panther, red bird, nightwing red robin and robin suits so we can make a sequal to Batman Deathwish and other than working on projects with close friends I'm very very very happy with the work we are turning out. so for me its an escape from being the scientist soon as you make it your living..... all that fades away instantly So in the most famous line ever DON'T GIVE UP YOUR DAY JOB! nondisclosed_email@example.com (resinsamurai)Tue, 01 Jan 2013 15:49:09 +0000 Re: What happened with my trade with Infrno and Mr Xhttps://bthecave.runboard.com/p16239,from=rss#post16239https://bthecave.runboard.com/p16239,from=rss#post16239 Don't accept anything longer than 45 days. Period, I had one trade that I took way way way longer on it than I should have but I relyed on someone else and when they fell through I figured out a way to get the project done no matter what. Maybe I have stronger morals. I would leave this hobby completely and would still make sure every single last person got what they ordered. Ed, Kevin and Shawn are the exact same way. Germanbat also. There are good guys out there. Unfortunately there are some bad ones who kinda ruin it for other people. I try and set realistic time frames. When I say two weeks I personally am shooting for one week. I have a cape on eBay right now that has a 3 week turnaround because I have a seamstress making them and she says a week or two so I bump up time to three. No one is gonna complain when they get what they wanted early but they really will if it is late. It is standard customer service. Communication and not leaving anyone in a lurch. And always have an ability to give the person their trade back if you fall short. nondisclosed_email@example.com (drftfan)Tue, 01 Jan 2013 10:16:46 +0000 Re: What happened with my trade with Infrno and Mr Xhttps://bthecave.runboard.com/p16235,from=rss#post16235https://bthecave.runboard.com/p16235,from=rss#post16235The issue is there is rarely ever enough money in this hobby to support the hiring of others.... sales even when steady are never steadily that high...even during the best times there were lulls and now that the economy is crappy sales are at an all time low. The #1 point of failure in this hobby is spending money that doesn't yet belong to you. Example. Your selling panther cowls and emblems for 350.00 shipped. Cowl rubber costs you 35.00 Emblem resin costs you 25.00 Labor costs you an hour to make it and an hour to trim and finish it, so lets pay you 35.00 for that. Shipping is 35.00 more. Sooooooooooo that's 60.00 in materials and 95.00 with shipping. So if you take the 95.00 that you absolutely need to cover your costs that still leaves 255.00 that doesn't belong to you until the customer receives their product and they are satisfied. If worst came to worst, ad you didn't insure the shipment (which you should!) and the post office destroyed it, or you made it and the materials went bad a few weeks after the buyer received it, you can still afford to remake the pieces at your cost and still make a profit. But greed will always always keep you from doing that. But in this hobby you don't do that, you sell 5 of those sets this month and use the money to pay your rent or mortgage or groceries..... with money that doesn't belong to you. You didn't use it to pay for materials, so now you need to hurry and sell a sixth set to cover the costs of materials and in the time it takes you to get that next sale (or hit since your acting like a drug addict) your first 5 customers are starting to get antsy and ask where there stuff is and you start to tell lies about it already being shipped but you didn't use tracking or you'll have to check tracking, PO lost things, bad materials, etc. For the record in the 10 years I have into this, I've had one bad gallon of silicone and one bad gallon kit of F32. That's it. The post has never lost a single prop I've ever mailed, they did however loose one thing of mine in that same ten years but it was letter not a 40.00 box. I have always charged for tracking and gotten tracking, to prove that you got your prop from me and to make sure the PO can't loose things. It's under 1.00 so there is never ever ever a reason not to use that, even if you have to do it out of pocket. Its smart! Its good business! Never make the hobby your main job unless you can afford it, you have a day job to pay all your bills, this hobby is for making extra money in your free time. Loose site of that and your going to be on that list of bad sellers so damn fast its not funny. I know of only a couple guys that make enough off their FX work that they don't have a day job. Me personally, I make a fine living being the super scientist that I am so only Sundays are studio days, I don't sell openly anymore but if I did the 12 hours we spend in the studio would be more than enough to cover at least 20 props a month. Unless you get lazy and keep saying next weekend. Only thing that should slow you down is weather and that's it!! Loved ones passing, car accidents, excuses o plenty, well none of those stop bills from coming in so it shouldn't stop product from going out either, if it did, more business's would fail in a year than they already do. I'm waiting on two things from makers, but I only gave them a materials deposit, they won't see the full payment until I see a photo of it ready to ship. THATS WHAT I SUGGEST IN ALL DEALS! AND IS ACCEPTABLE IN BUSINESS! 10% down to get materials, 10% when production begins and 80% upon shipping. Hell even 20/20/60% would be perfectly acceptable in my book. but soon as there is less to earn than you were already paid the motivation to come thru falls faster than science can measure taking steps like that stops half the scammers and cuts half of the delay out of things because people will want to work to get the other bulk of the money. yes your forcing someone tyo conduct proper business efforts, which is a pain, but unless you want to loose the money and what you bought, you need to do it! In the case of the foam clooney's.... I offered to Jeff twice to go to LA and see the guy that's supposed to make the foam pieces and if need be, run the foam myself or have him bring the molds over to a friends shop where they could be run. He ignored both times, which makes me suspicious. He'll tell you to talk to X directly when he subbed that out but he won't let me talk to this guy. Since you, guido and neil are all my friends and you've all asked me to build these up for you once you get them ( jeff asked me to build his two too) its in everyone's best interest to put me in touch with the guy here to see if I can't help make this come to an end thats all I can offer you guys I asked jeff months and months ago to at least make you guys emblems and clips so you had something sitting there, something to keep your hopes up, to keep you from watching the clock, hell I even offered to make the molds for them myself if it would help but all he did was make excuses, bitch about the hobby and tell me a long winded story about the guy making them having all kinds of family and health issues, but yet that guy and his studio were still working on films so that just goes to prove my point. so much time has passed that you can easily get a judgment in court and because jeffs in canada and he sold to germany, south africa and the us it become an international fraud court issue which is much much more serious. but your going to spend a bit to prosecute and to collect, but that route is always an option, and unless jeff has the best lawyer every he's going to loose regardless of any reasons he can come up with and short of bankruptcy he'll have to pay you back and paying you back should have been on his forefront long long long ago because he never should have paid the guy here in full because even an industry pro will fall victim to the same exact failure that a hobbyist will. its very very much a missnomer that there's a living in props, even when your someone like stan winston studios (legacy fx now) or ADI or a few others I can name that I'm friends with and know how much they make on projects. but since work is never constant, shows are usually years out when you agree to make things for them, and you struggle to get the job doing it usually for the lowest dollar... so if your really lucky and the best in the business you'll do ok, but you'll never be a millionaire having an fx studio. The real money is in prop master and or production, so that when films do well you get apiece of it on top of the prop work you made. so all that said, your best bet is to stay on the people who owe you until they are sick to death of you and the only way to make you go away is to get you what you paid them for, and second when deals go wrong, at the first hint of them going wrong bring it out into the light, that sometimes helps motivate people hell once upon mearly saying X or his real name of Jeffrey Michael Dullam was enough to get a fire under his butt... not sure if that still works now when so many know what a liar he is holy hell I can type a lot nondisclosed_email@example.com (resinsamurai)Mon, 31 Dec 2012 17:29:43 +0000 Re: What happened with my trade with Infrno and Mr Xhttps://bthecave.runboard.com/p16233,from=rss#post16233https://bthecave.runboard.com/p16233,from=rss#post16233One of the largest differences that I see in comparing this hobby to a "normal" business, is that in a typical business, as you grow, you hire on more qualified folks to take on the growing demand and the business thrives and grows... With this hobby, if you have or are becoming a skilled craftsman at this costuming biz and you're building a reputation and now you're getting more and more orders, you typically don't have that luxury of hiring additional 'qualified' folks to help you with the increased supply and demand... Therefore, as we see over and over here in costuming land, the wait times get longer and longer, and people get frustrated... Then, to try and get stuff out more promptly, corners start getting cut and the quality goes down... Then the unhappy customers start creating negative posts about you and it just spirals downward... Don't really know what the answer is here... Jay, you've been doing this a long time. What are the options here? I'm supposing that you just have to get to the point that you only accept so many orders at a time. I think that guys don't want to do that, because they want that business (That will end up going elswhere), and then as we see, it just gets U...G...L...Y!!nondisclosed_email@example.com (Bruce Wayne4U)Mon, 31 Dec 2012 12:44:50 +0000 Re: What happened with my trade with Infrno and Mr Xhttps://bthecave.runboard.com/p16232,from=rss#post16232https://bthecave.runboard.com/p16232,from=rss#post16232Yes, even my best work still has flaws of some type in it, there's no suck thing as perfect, because no matter how hard you try and no matter how good you are, there's always always always some sorta flaw but that doesn't mean you shouldn't strive for perfection and as a buyer you should never accept less just because that's all that's out there or because a maker cut every corner possible, your better off not buying and not giving them your money until they can take this seriously this is true of every freakin industry out there whether it be here on the boards or at your local wallmart most problems in this hobby come from sellers losing their perspective, they think that because they have something that you want they can just treat you how ever they want and you should just take it but thanks to recasting, 3D modeling/printing there are more makers than ever, so its never been more important than it is right now to make the best products possible and giving the best customer services ever seen so that your customers stay happy and tell others about how great you were and how awesome your work is. but crap is king and people will accept and praise even the most mediocre work right next to the mona lisa saying how both are worthy of the same praise..... yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa   nondisclosed_email@example.com (resinsamurai)Sun, 30 Dec 2012 16:33:49 +0000 Re: What happened with my trade with Infrno and Mr Xhttps://bthecave.runboard.com/p16231,from=rss#post16231https://bthecave.runboard.com/p16231,from=rss#post16231haha. Over and over and over again. No one makes anything over again or pays someone else to do it. You just don't do that instead of checking records first and showing that you did indeed ship something and that the buyer should have it, otherwise the buyer could be ripping you off. But you can confidently say that you'll remake the pieces because YOU NEVER MADE THEM THE FIRST TIME!! THE POST OFFICE CAN'T LOOSE WHAT YOU NEVER SENT SO THEIRS NO RECEIPT TO GO AND CHECK! Liar liar pants on fire!! Heard this from people like janty, a few on the RPF and I expect a few more people to say this about another pair of makers out there. Your always going to hear about it because no one runs their hobby like a business, if they did they would be out of business in a week or they would be known for always coming thru. It can't be both and its usually the bad things that your known. If you want solace then take it in knowing that Inferno is such a god damn fool that he thought that he wouldn't get screwed over by Mr X, but what in the hell would make him think he's so special!!! I was very good friends with janty once upon a time, worked with him, we hung out, and yet he screwed me over just the same as someone he only knew thru the internet. Your going to get screwed every freakin time there's a two party deal and your lucky when you aren't screwed over by people who have even been around forever. Its water under the bridge but I warned Inferno repeatedly about MrX and Bob Dullam but he just wouldn't listen and so he got screwed and so did all of you! So inferno's off morning and prior to that whining about the hobby not being what it was yet he had a hand in far to many people getting screwed, and has the balls to show the projects he's working on and how great they are why others are waiting waiting waiting waiting on him to come thru with no hope at this point. And if he did come to comment he would tell you how he's waiting on people to, as though that makes it right. I'll never understand why there all these threads warning people about bad sellers but its like people can't read, don't read or don't care cause they just hope for the best because the seller has something that they want Its like a casino and the house always wins in the end!! In the end they should at least thank you for giving them money for free. Hell beggars on the street usually say thank you, and you know the money you give them is going down the drain, in the veins or up the nose. I wish you all the best in future dealings and know that being patient after paying in full should run out in less than 90 days! I emailed them earlier and invited both of them to respond here if they would like to present their side of the story. I’m not looking to try and get the admins or anyone to intervene or anything like that. I just felt like venting a bit and to also put a warning out there to anyone looking to deal with Infrno or Mr X. Maybe my misfortune can be a lesson to someone else. Essentially what this is about is a trade I started with Infrno back in 2010. I started talking to him in November to get some info about commissioning a Begins suit to see about maybe going with him to do my armor and cowl. We discussed terms and came to an agreement. Between March 12 to June 17 2011 everything was finalized and payment in full was made for a commission comprised of Begins armor, a cowl, and gauntlets. June 18 I got a response back confirming receipt of the money and earlier in the month he gave me a turnaround time of 3-4 weeks. Up to that point everything seemed fine. As far as trades go I typically prefer to pay upfront and get it out of the way. It’s how I’ve done most of my trades on the BOTB and RPF and I haven’t had any issues with that except for with Infrno. There wasn’t any rush to get things done with the suit so I gave him a bit of leeway with the time to get the suit completed and out to me. I know sometimes it takes multiple pulls to get quality pieces so I figured if he needed a bit more than the 3-4 weeks that was fine. In September I was curious where we were. At this point I hadn’t received any communication from Infrno so I went ahead and emailed him on Sept 8 to see where we were at. Sept 10 I get a response to let me know that it was almost done but he busted his leg. He was kind enough to include some pretty gnarly pics of his leg at the time. Everything was still fine at this time. I figure a leg injury can take 6 weeks, maybe more so additional delays were to be expected. Jan 25 2012 I Hadn’t heard anything from him at that point so I emailed him to see where we were. Feb 13 I sent him another email since I hadn’t received a response at that point. I started to get errors with his email we were using at that point so I tried his other email address and even his website. I even resorted to leaving posts up on the Cave to try and get a response. June 30 I finally get a response from Infrno. For some reason he was thinking I received the suit. I never received anything at that point. Never got an email to let me know anything was being sent, no email to confirm I received anything. July 3 he asked if I’d been in contact with Mr X saying they spoke and he was told by Mr X that the suit was sent out. I find this bit amusing because it was my understanding up to this point that Infrno would be making the suit. Not Mr X. Mr X never gets mentioned until this email. This is the point where everything pretty much went to hell with the whole deal. July 5 I get an email from Infrno with Mr X’s email address so I can get in touch with him. Okay fine. I went ahead and emailed Mr X so we could try to get this finished up. July 30 I finally get an email from Mr X. He said he sent the suit out a year ago and that he needed to check his records to see who signed for it and whatnot. Okay, a year is a long time, I figured it may take a bit to find the tracking info so I gave him a couple of weeks to see if he could find the tracking info. Aug 15 I was curious where we were so I emailed him to see where we were. I don’t get any response until aug 31 and that was only because I emailed Infrno to see if he could contact Mr X to see what was going on. At this point it’s also the first time I mention getting a refund. I figured if they couldn’t deliver on their end then a refund was in order. Sept 28 I email Mr X again. I have this feeling if I didn’t email Mr X or Infrno I wouldn’t get any contact at all. They’ve got to be two of the worst people as far as keeping you updated on what’s going on with a trade. This is the second time I mention refund. I get an email from him on Sept 29 and another one on Sept 30 basically trying to reassure me that everything will get taken care of. I wouldn’t receive another email from Mr X until… Nov 6. That was only because I emailed him on Nov 5. At this point I pretty much let him and Infrno know that I was no longer interested in the suit. At this point I pretty much told them I wanted a refund. Nov 6 Mr X states that he still hadn’t had a chance to go through the boxes where his papers are. So he had over 3 months to try and find a tracking # and he produced nothing. As he states in this particular email, “I’ve had no chance to go through the boxes where my papers are as I said they are in storage and not where I am. So I just ate the cost and made the pieces again. They will ship sometime end of next week and I will send over the tracking. “ So he stated he would send out everything the following week which would have given him until Nov 18 if we go to that following Sunday. Surprisingly enough no email from him at that point. I email him Nov 19 and again on the 26th. No contact from Mr X until Nov 28. His response, “Had to pay a guy about $500 in the end to finish the pieces just to get this even. All my molds are stored back where I used to stay so it wasn’t really that easy or convenient . So as soon as he gets the pieces in the box and shipped I’ll have the tracking. I know he was just about done but we had thanksgiving and life.” So basically he lied to me on the 6th about sending stuff out the following week. The 19th would have fallen before Thanksgiving so the holiday had absolutely nothing to do with anything. Now there’s also a magical third person involved in trying to get this suit done. Dec 10 I email him and he emails me back. Again refund is mentioned and again I don’t get anywhere with Mr X. The email also confirmed for me that the suit is nowhere near ready to go at this point. So here we are a year and a half after the money was sent and they’ve basically stolen my money. Nov I emailed Infrno as well. An interesting thing I found out from Infrno at that point was that Mr X was into Infrno for a bunch of money as well. Mr X must be a really good friend to Infrno for him to keep working with him at this point is the only thing I can figure from that. We get to Dec 10 and up to this point in regards to a refund the only thing I’ve gotten from Infrno and Mr X is that the other person got the money. At that point I’ve pretty much reached my limit with the whole ordeal. I’m a very patient person but even I have my limits I suppose. I decided I would try and push Mr X towards getting this done. Some people can’t work without supervision or deadlines. Since Infrno seems to be incapable of taking charge and making sure that Mr X is on point I went ahead and gave him a cutoff date of Dec 22. At that point I let them know I wanted either a tracking # to let me know everything was on its way, or a refund confirmation via PayPal. I let them know that if I didn’t receive either than my next step is to pursue legal action against them. At this point it seems like the only way I’m going to get my money back. In addition to that I’ll be filing a report with my local police via their internet crimes unit. There’s a couple of other things I’m going to pursue as well. Some people would say I should probably just let it go but that doesn’t work for me. It was a lot of money and I can’t just drop it. If I did that then they would have my money and I would have nothing. I feel I’ve been more than fair with both of them. It’s their fault it’s reached this point. I’ve ordered stuff all over the world and across the country. I’ve never had any issues receiving anything. Mr X’s responses to the situation make it really suspect that he sent anything at all a year ago. That pretty much brings us to the emails I sent them earlier letting them know I’ll be getting lawyers and going from there. They need to take responsibility apparently need to learn a lesson. Sorry to make this such a long post but I keep detailed records of all my trades so there’s a lot to go through sometimes. I wanted to give everyone a clear picture of where I’m coming from on my end. It also seemed the best way to lay out the details of the situation without making an attack on Mr X or Infrno. I want to be clear also that my problem with them is the way they handled the situation not on them personally. Also I wanted to put this out as my reason to why I recommended not dealing with either one of them as far as trades. This post is available on the Cave, BOTB, and RPF.
