Is there call for a cored silicone cowl?

Hi all. I'm toying with the idea of sculpting another cowl and wanted to do something organic.

With that I mind, I thought it would be good if, being organic in design, that I cast it in super soft silicone so that facial expression would translate through the cowl.

This isn't an interest thread but I would like peoples opinions as to wether it's worth while doing or do you think it would be overkill?

Hey Rich, the Demon Bat would be an excellent application for this choice of casting material. I have lots of inside pics in high res if needed.

Hey jeff.

I hadn't even though of that. Not something I'm looking to do now as I want to have a bit of free creativity but worth considering for the future

When I read the first line in your post, I immediately thought of the Bat Demon like Jeff and Neil said. That would be amazing in silicone.

hmmm.

the more i think abot it the more i like the idea of the demon bat, maybe to the 2 side by side.

the only problem with copying the demon bat is the sheer thickness of the back of the head and neck. I recon the finished cowl would weigh in the region of 5kg and thats a lot of weight to have on your head and shoulders

Rich could you not make the silicone skin as you would normally and then use a second core mold to make up the mass with silicon foam? don't know how much that would reduce the weight though???

Hi Neil.

you could use a silicne foam insert but it would be a real pain in the ass to do, you would need to cast the foam piece first, attach that to the core, then put the outer mould on, then inject the silicne. the main problem is if it is not aligned perfectly or moves in the mould, you could end up with touch downs where the foam is on the suface of the cowl. more hassle than its worth really

Rich, I've thought a little bit about this too. Tell me if this would work, because it works, theoretically, in my mind.

Sculpt the mask on the core and make your mold (3 piece fiberglass for the silicone)

Demold the sculpture. Shave it down by the thickness you want the skin.

Remold for the foam (both molds would have bolt holes that go into the core)

Demold. Run the silicone foam in the smaller, foam mold. Remove the mold and do a quick trim of the foam to remove seam lines.

Bolt on the mold for the actual cowl and inject, filling the void around the foam...

Also, I think the demon bat cowl would be fine in straight silicone too. Something like eco-flex 0030. I just did a mask with a thick back to the head and it's not noticeably heavy.

sounds fine in thoery.
the main issues i could see are demoulding the sculpt without destroying the sculpt, and accuratly shaving the sculpt down for the core.

you would be better off cleaning out the mould then laying in slabs of clay to the thickness you want the silicone and cast into that to create your core.

but, at the end of the day, the fun is in the experimenting.

thinking more about it, I too dont think the weight would be too muh of an issute and the weight would be evenly distributed.

Jeff, send me over those demon bat pics and ill put it on the calender
