Silicone question

Can you pour silicone into a silicone mold? Would you need any release agents? Anyone have experiences with this? Any help is appreciated!

Depends.

you cant pour platinum sil, in tin sil.. and vice versa...

I run the carbon parts for my TDK suit in MM15T, out of a MM30 mold- with easy release 200.

No problem, my man. I know what its like to wonder things... and no one seems to have the answer... SO- if i have the answer-- Ill gladly share it emoticon

Speaking of having the answer-- you wanna see the epic fail i just had tryin to make a TDK shoulder armor base. Waste of about 25lbs of ultracal, then half a gallon of latex, and about 25oz of foam urethane...

all junk.

If i can help someone avoid that--- it makes me happy emoticon

WHAT???

What do you wonder that no one has the answer to boy?

If I was sensitive, I might be able to take offense at that
given all the answers I have given you over the last year
or two

LOL

had you listen to what I told you about the hero shoulder armor you would not have that epic fail

hehe

And what’s ten years? Well, it’s roughly how long it takes to put in ten thousand hours of hard practice. Ten thousand hours is the magic number of greatness.

Re: Silicone question

I have poured platinum on platinum before and forgot the release agent and was able to get it apart, I would suggest a spray of release though as long as it wont muck up the surface of the positive.

The epic fail was the mold. Not the process. Voids in the bat, voids in the pecs.. etc...

I am still going to try the way we discussed= but may try using a foam base as well. The weight difference is silly.

Unfortunately, this is going to have to be a silicon mold. Which is expensive- and im not interested in dumping any more money into this.

My suit for now, will be what you see-- foam filled latex suit- with urethane shoulder pads.

Re: Silicone question

Here's a few silicone tips....emoticon

As Keith said you cant pour platinum into tin silicone molds.

You can however pour tin into platinum molds.

Yes you need a release for silicone to silicone.

The easiest is Vaseline diluted with mineral spirits and brushed into the mold...or sponge wiped in to avoid streaks.
Silicone will bond to silicone so make sure you release it well.

Keith I like very much what you're doing with the latex foam backed castings. I used to do a lot of full suits that way and with your application I'd *suggest* skinning the molds with urethane rather than latex. But, in any case...you're getting really cool results and I think are doing things right buy trial and error...and enjoying the successes of your accomplishments.

Costuming is a big world...with a million ways of doing the same thing. Guys keep up the great work!
