Clooney cowl, a second sculpt/version was used in the film.

I discovered this a few years ago so it's long overdue, I hope other Clooney cowl fans will appreciate the info.

We all know about the Clooney Panther (modified Kilmer Panther) cowl and the regular Clooney cowl. But there are actually two versions of the Clooney cowl used in the film, two completly different sculpts. Here is a well known photo from a magazine showing Jose sculpting a second cowl.

Image

First, here is the version we all know, used on all the posters, studio shoots and throughout the entire film. This is 3 different cowls and they all look the same.

Image

Here is the second version, different sculpt. This is 3 different cowls and they all look the same. When comparing them it's very easy to see that they're two different sculpts. On the second version the ears are slightly longer, the eyebrows are different with less details, the eyeholes are smaller and sharper, the cheeks are softer and the neckline is completely different.

Image

This version of the cowl can only be seen in two scenes throughout the entire film. The moment Batman stand-up after the ice skates eject from the boots and when Batman argue with Robin and throw him into the vat of ice cream.

I have always suspected, that there was only one or two of this other cowl and it was used in test footage...

WB was famous for thinking cowls looked to mean or scary..

the one thing with this mystery cowl is that ears come down and curve into the head, not down into the traps

only way to know if its anything other than a bodyshop is to go ask Jose.

I can tell you that for sure the cowls were sculpted on a different buck than the panther cowls were, there are tell tail signs that the clooney cowls were not made the same way

Other photos of the cowls

the sculpt in that photo has always been really really 89 esc to me, with wider ears and a more pronounced dome

After I discovered this I told you about it but you thought the difference was caused by foam shrinkage. I always disagree with that because there were too many different details in the sculpt itself.

The only reason I'm posting about this now is because Jose recently confirmed to me I was correct. Not only that, he actually sculpted it 3 times in total before it finally fit George perfectly. It had nothing to do with how mean or scary looking it was.

Weird that he wore the other versions. Foam shrinkage can distort things like crazy so that was my reasoning.

Yes, there are scenes were he's moving so much in the cowl that half his throat shows, and they painted his neck in the same black as his eyes to try and hide it.

cool that jose could confirm this!

I prefer the mean looking version where the ears are longer and run further down

The scary thing was a big issue on Returns, and why the Steve Wang version of the cowl was sculpted 2 times and then Jose ended up doing the version we know.

So it took clooney 3 times to be happy with a cowl that he ruined batman in. LOL

Good to know and great that you cleared the confusion

Great topic and nice comparison.
Why do people dislike that cowl?I think it looks great and quite unique.

people dislike it because Clooney gave a crappy performance as batman, he was still acting like Doug on ER when he put the batsuit on everyday so it didn't play well.

But the cowl is actually pretty nice, not as nice as the panther but pretty damn cool none the less

His neck isn't painted, it's just shadows.

Yes, it was great that he could confirm it. I actually forgot to ask him when I first discovered it, it was not until a few weeks ago I finally did.

I'm glad you like it.

I own one of the main version used throughout the film. It is my cowl to the far left on the first picture.
